The Paxman Model 13,
is a professional Bb single horn with additional features. As well as the stopping valve customary to single Bb horns, the Model 13 also features a whole tone ascending valve which puts the horn into C. This gives the security of playing on a shorter horn in the higher register, but without the dramatic difference in tone that an f or eb-alto can produce. The design also allows for the ascending valve to only raise the pitch by a semitone, which can be more helpfull still in certain keys.

Whilst the majority of players will opt for a double horn setup for most of their repertoire, a single Bb can help provide that extra level of sound and tonal clarity that a double simply can’t achieve. The Model 13 does this without sacrificing the core of the sound that is so essential to all horn playing. The lightweight and balanced design of this model make it a pleasure to play, for even the longest rehearsal!
Most notably played by Ifor James for many years, the Model 13 has had several variations in it’s wrap over the years. The photos on this page show the original design (above) and a revised version (right).
